We are grateful that you invited us along on your journey (teachers always teach, right?). And like your other friends, coworkers and students, we have appreciated you in so many ways over the years.

A fragment of 1 Cor 15:51 immediately came to mind “…we shall all be changed…”. Intended to describe the transformation from mortal to immortal in the fuller passage, this short segment reflects to me how before that ultimate change things like hospice/the nearness of death changes us all. I’ve learned to respect that ‘in process’ space, without needing to approve of it or welcome it…it just is now where we are.
I’m grateful for the brighter, inspiring tone of the following verses from there, and especially for the light and hope they shine on our changing lives. Images like “The twinkling of an eye” are so intimate, so personal….reminding me that God draws even closer to us in this sacred journey.
So I’m thinking of you both, being drawn even nearer to God in these days, and being surrounded by love, community, and prayers.
I’m in North Dakota now, but will reach out when I’m back home next week.

I wish I could be there with you - my parents are each having different grab bags of dementia and we all have to help with care. Not an excuse, just a reason.
More than usual I am treasuring books you have given me, and paintings. And Ann, I'll try to get a card out tomorrow, but I want to make sure you hear from me here at least that so many of the things I like about myself as a thinker, teacher, pastor, and Christian I have because of you.
